BE SAFE, HAVE FUN

Submitted by the OPP

With the weekend almost upon us, officers from the City of Kawartha Lakes detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind those planning on outdoor adventures this weekend to do so safely.

If your plans include being on the ice in any capacity, whether that be for a game of hockey, to walk the dog, do some ice fishing, or on a snowmobile, remember to check the thickness. The Lifesaving Society recommends a minimum of 4" for walking and ice fishing and 5" for one snowmobile or ATV. Remember that in areas of moving water the ice will be less stable.

When venturing out onto the ice, do so with another person and be prepared for an emergency - wear ice picks or a floater suit and carry a fully charged cell phone with you.

It is also important to tell someone your plan, including your intended route, how long you will be gone and any stops you plan to make along the way.

Planning ahead will help to ensure that the outdoor activities are enjoyed by all.
